Smashing Magazine: November 2008 Desktop Calendar

Smashing Magazine has a regular section where designers can submit their creations to become the current month’s featured wallpapers, with all the exposure that gives; there’s not an economic reward, but the satisfaction that is having people to admire your work and have your desktop calendar on their screens.

I created this wallpaper with the calendar and without it, and it has been featured in their November 2008 Desktop Calendars selection (you can read the post here). You can download it on four different screen resolutions: 1280×960, 1600×1200, 1680×1050 and 1920×1200.

The concept around it is Alphabeat’s hit, Fascination. It’s a wonderful song that deserved a desktop of its own.

Smashing Magazine: The <hr /> Contest

“What is <hr />? Basically, it is an old HTML-tag which has been used since the very beginning of the Web. hr stands for the horizontal rule and represents exactly what you would expect — a horizontal line or a horizontal divider. By default, web browsers render hr as a simple horizontal line. In terms of semantics the tag is supposed to clearly separate content blocks. This is often used in design of footers, but also makes sense in other situations — for instance, if you want to separate two blog posts or make the divisions within the content structure sharper.”

Smashing Magazine created a <hr /> design contest in August 2008 for designers to send their entries. The winning designer would receive at home a Wacom Intuos3 9X12 USB Tablet.

That contest was a wonderful way to get exposure and get people to see our creations; we weren’t lucky, as these designs didn’t get into the top entries, but we have the submitted entries for you to see.

The designs are a tribute to the CMYK color mode (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black). Three different styles for different styles of CMYK lovers. You can download the horizontal dividers and use them for free if you like (you just have to save the images below on your computer):

Whatever Else

Since July 2008, Whatever Else is a blogs’ network, consisting on five blogs: we.colours, we.like, we.love, we.medium and we.pressnonstop. Each blog covers a different subject, and they all have one thing in common: they are very close to showbusiness (design/fashion/photography, tv series, gossip, tv/music/film and Press/Advertising).

It was a project thought, designed and developped entirely by VOKURO, and gets no other revenue than Google Adsense. Its aim is to be an open window to the world and let people read about interesting subjects and get further than the newspapers do. In Whatever Else you won’t find articles about politics or economy, you will find art, goodies and information of the media: basically entertainment, nothing very serious.
